Biography
Gift of Gab established his reputation as the technically skilled MC within the acclaimed underground hip-hop duo Blackalicious, where he collaborated closely with producer and DJ Chief Xcel. Praised for his precise delivery, he also demonstrated strong songwriting ability by weaving intricate, multi-layered science fiction concepts into his verses while maintaining focus on accessible, street-oriented subjects. Listeners can experience his contributions to Blackalicious through their standout 2002 album Blazing Arrow, whereas the highlights of his individual output surfaced on Escape 2 Mars in 2009 and The Next Logical Progression in 2012.
Born Tim Parker, he spent most of his childhood in Pacoima within the San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles yet completed high school in Sacramento. It was there that he encountered Chief Xcel, born Xavier Mosley, during 1987. At that stage Parker performed under the names Tiny T or Gabby T and was already sharpening his abilities as a competitive battle MC; he and Mosley formed a partnership the next year. Following graduation Parker returned to Los Angeles, though he and Mosley sustained their connection through telephone conversations. While enrolled at UC-Davis, Mosley connected with an assortment of unconventional hip-hop figures who later formed the SoleSides collective, prompting Parker to relocate to the Bay Area in 1991 and adopt Gift of Gab as his chosen hip-hop identity. Blackalicious released their initial single, “Swan Lake,” via SoleSides in 1994, with additional tracks appearing afterward that built their cult following and secured a European tour. Work began on a debut full-length project around the time SoleSides dissolved and reorganized as Quannum, yet the recording process proved extended and challenging because Gift of Gab confronted an alcohol dependency that required several years to resolve. In 1999 Blackalicious resurfaced with the A2G EP, on which “Alphabet Aerobics” energized the underground scene and positioned Gift of Gab as an exceptional emerging talent. That promise was borne out by Blackalicious’s first two albums, 2000’s NIA and 2002’s Blazing Arrow, which established him among hip-hop’s most overlooked elite MCs.
Following the widespread critical acclaim for Blazing Arrow, Gift of Gab expanded his reach through numerous guest spots, appearing alongside DJ Vadim, the British hip-hop group New Flesh, and Michael Franti & Spearhead. Early in 2003 he underwent emergency eye surgery stemming from diabetes-related complications, though he recovered completely. To maintain creative momentum ahead of Blackalicious’s third album he pursued a solo effort for Quannum in tandem with Seattle producers Vitamin D and Jake One. The advance single “The Writz” surfaced in late 2003, and the full project, 4th Dimensional Rocketships Going Up, followed in spring 2004. Critical responses to the production ranged considerably, yet the album—an understated, laid-back release—reinforced Gift of Gab’s standing as one of his era’s foremost MCs regardless of scene.
Gift of Gab joined forces with rapper Lateef the Truthspeaker and producer Headnodic to create the Bay Area hip-hop supergroup the Mighty Underdogs, whose album Droppin' Science Fiction appeared in 2008. His second solo album, Escape 2 Mars, arrived in 2009 and again earned praise for the sharpness of his rhymes and delivery. A third solo release, The Next Logical Progression, came out in 2012. While he maintained involvement with Blackalicious he also contributed verses to recordings by Lyrics Born, DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, and Ben Harper. Amid these ongoing activities Gift of Gab persisted in managing health issues tied to diabetes; after years of kidney failure he received a transplant in January 2020. He passed away on June 18, 2021, at age 50.
