Biography
Amid the national attention drawn to Athens, Georgia by R.E.M. and the B-52's, the Glands set out to produce music that reflected the reputation their city had already earned. Rather than adopting the relaxed tone of college rock or the manic energy of party rock, Ross Shapiro on vocals and guitar, Joe Rowe on drums, Craig McQuiston on bass, Frank McDonald on guitar, and Doug Stanley on keyboards cultivated a restrained yet darker Brit-pop approach that stopped short of gloom or melancholy. Bar/None Records signed the group and issued their first album, Double Thriller, in 1997. Their second, self-titled release followed in 2000 on Capricorn.
