Distinguish from the 1960s/early-'70s psychedelic band that shared the name, this quartet emerged as a Cleveland-rooted hard rock unit active from the late 1970s into the 1980s. Formation occurred in Columbus, Ohio, during 1976, when bassist/producer Eric Moore united with lead guitarist Mark Chatfield, rhythm guitarist/keyboardist Bob Hill, and drummer Glen Cataline, each of whom supplied lead vocals. The Godz secured a Casablanca contract in 1977, the same year they joined Cheap Trick as openers for Kiss on the Love Gun Tour. Two obscure Casablanca albums followed—1978's The Godz and 1979's Nothing Is Sacred—both receiving scant notice. Further releases arrived in the 1980s, among them 1985's I'll Get You Rockin' on Heavy Metal America and 1987's Mongolians on Grudge. The band soon receded from view, yet Moore reassembled it in the 2010s for Last of the Outlaws in 2012 and Last Rites in 2015.
