The Goldstars formed in Chicago during the early 2000s, pulling together players from several neighborhood groups. Skipper handled organ and Goodtime sat behind the drums—using their given names—after time spent in New Duncan Imperials, while vocalist and bassist Sal, known as the white soul brother, had previously logged years with the Krinkles. Early on the guitarist slot stayed open because the Goldstars never planned to work full-time, so most gigs revolved around loud renditions of familiar rock and R&B standards that any seasoned player could deliver. The chair finally locked in place when fabulously named Dag Juhlin joined, another local veteran who had already won admirers during his stint with the Slugs. The Stars quickly turned into a regular presence on the scene, delivering glitter and hip shake to eager crowds across neighborhoods from Rogers Park to Pullman. Their first set of original songs reached vinyl in November 2003 via the Pravda pressing of Gotta Get Out!. Cuts such as “She Don’t Like,” “Can You Satisfy,” and “Oh Yeah!” signaled the raucous energy packed inside the hot pink sleeve.
