Biography
Following the Go-Go's mid-'80s dissolution, guitarist Charlotte Caffey assembled the three-piece group the Graces as her next endeavor. The lineup came together in 1988 when Caffey recruited Meredith Brooks and Gia Ciambotti, after which A&M Records signed the trio. Their first album, A Perfect View, appeared in 1989 and earned favorable notices overall, though its only notable single, "Lay Down Your Arms," achieved limited chart traction. Early in 1991 the label ended its relationship with the Graces, prompting Brooks to exit in favor of a solo path that later yielded her number-two hit "Bitch" in 1998. Chrissy Shefts, previously a member of Go-Go drummer Gina Schock's project House of Schock, stepped in on guitar, allowing the band to keep touring. A year afterward Ciambotti accepted an invitation to serve as a backup singer on Bruce Springsteen's road show, and without completing another record the Graces disbanded.
