The Herbie Nichols Project has produced updated interpretations of works by the late pianist Herbie Nichols on the Soul Note and Palmetto imprints. Pianist Frank Kimbrough and bassist Ben Allison established the ensemble together in 1992, linking it to the Jazz Composers Collective, the New York group formed in that same period. The band captured its first release, Love Is Proximity, across sessions held in 1995 and 1996. Although the drum chair rotated from project to project, trumpeter and flugelhornist Ron Horton remained a constant presence, while saxophonist Ted Nash came aboard for the 1999 Soul Note date Dr. Cyclop's Dream. The group’s third effort, Strange City, arrived in 2001 as its initial Palmetto outing and featured drummer Matt Wilson.
