Biography
Emerging from a commitment to the principles of indie and punk traditions, the Hold Steady willingly incorporated elements of rock classicism by merging the Replacements' bar-band energy with the sweeping musical canvases associated with Bruce Springsteen, as vocalist Craig Finn delivered narratives marked by equal parts fervor and straightforward erudition. A passionately loyal audience gravitated toward the boozy, anthem-driven approach of their first release, Almost Killed Me, issued in 2004. The group sharpened both its sonic approach and its thematic perspective while amplifying guitar textures on the expansive Teeth Dreams in 2014, then examined a sense of cultural disconnection through nearly operatic breadth on Open Door Policy in 2021 and The Price of Progress in 2023.
After relocating from Minneapolis to New York in 2000, vocalist/guitarist Craig Finn, formerly of Lifter Puller, assembled the Hold Steady with the intention of evoking the sonic character of acts like the Replacements and the Grifters; he enlisted guitarist Tad Kubler, another Lifter Puller alumnus, along with drummer Judd Counsell and bassist Galen Polivka. Capturing performances largely in a live setting, the quartet issued Almost Killed Me on Frenchkiss Records in March 2004. Dave Gardener, known for work with Rocket from the Crypt and Drive Like Jehu, and Dean Botulonis handled production duties for Separation Sunday, which appeared in 2005. Franz Nicolay, keyboards player from the World/Inferno Friendship Society, and Bobby Drake, previously with End Transmission and Arm, joined the lineup on drums. Boys and Girls in America, the band's third album, arrived in 2006 as its inaugural Vagrant release. Following extensive road work that shaped most of the material for their fourth record, the Hold Steady returned to John Agnello's Water Music studio to track Stay Positive, their most elaborately produced effort to date; both Vagrant and Rough Trade issued the album in July 2008.
Franz Nicolay's exit was announced by the band in 2010, the same year Heaven Is Whenever, their fifth album, came out. A short hiatus began in 2012, during which frontman Craig Finn issued his first solo project, Clear Heart Full Eyes. Reforming in 2013 with guitarist Steve Selvidge added to the quintet, the refreshed ensemble entered the studio to contribute a track to the Game of Thrones soundtrack, also issued as a limited-edition single for Record Store Day 2013. Early in 2014 they released their sixth album, Teeth Dreams, together with the covers EP RAGS, whose proceeds supported the children of longtime supporter Mike "Jersey Mike" Van Jura following his passing in 2012. Once touring for Teeth Dreams concluded, Finn turned to solo work, resulting in the more personal Faith in the Future, produced by Josh Kaufman and released on Partisan Records in late 2015. Solo performances occupied the first half of the year before attention returned to Hold Steady matters, including deluxe reissues of Almost Killed Me and Separation Sunday that surfaced at the close of 2016; to mark the occasion the band, now rejoined by Franz Nicolay, appeared at festivals and a run of sold-out Brooklyn dates.
Thrashing Thru the Passion arrived in August 2019 and incorporated several tracks first heard on EPs issued between 2017 and 2019. That year the group resumed studio activity with producer Josh Kaufman and engineer D. James Goodwin for their eighth album. After laying down material across two sessions, the members undertook celebratory weekend residencies in major cities, among them a three-night stand in London during March 2020, where portions of the new material were previewed. Upon completion of the London dates, the COVID-19 pandemic compelled a return to New York, cancellation of remaining scheduled residencies, and postponement of the album's release. The single "Family Farm" emerged at the end of 2020, followed in early 2021 by "Heavy Covenant" and "Spices," all serving as advance glimpses of Open Door Policy, which the band's Positive Jams imprint released in February 2021. The Price of Progress, their ninth album, surfaced in March 2023 and ranked among their most expansive works, with strings and horns enriching the arrangements while Finn presented ten story-songs rich in vivid imagery and memorable characters. Four months later the Hold Steady collaborated with author Michael Hann on The Gospel of the Hold Steady: How a Resurrection Really Feels, a collection of essays by and about the band featuring contributions from fans and favored writers.
