Biography
An acoustic trio called the Hot Club of Cowtown delivers a singular fusion of western swing modeled on Bob Wills and continental jazz shaped by Django Reinhardt. Emerging in the late 1990s, the ensemble quickly drew broad praise through frequent touring and multiple Ameripolitan Music Awards. Across numerous releases they have applied their lively approach to both standards and original material, among them Tall Tales from 1999, Ghost Train from 2002, and Wild Kingdom from 2019.
Although formed in New York City, the group began as a duo of guitarist Whit Smith, born in Connecticut and raised in Massachusetts, and Kansas-born Elana James, née Frememan. Before their partnership, Smith trained privately under Bill Connors and Richard Lieberson while leading his own thirteen-member Western Caravan. James, who earned a B.A. in Comparative Religion from Barnard College, pursued classical violin studies at the Manhattan School of Music and explored Dhrupad North Indian classical music with Pandit Vidhur Malik; she additionally passed several summers on Colorado horse ranches and performing fiddle in cowboy bands. Performing first as Whit & Elana, the pair moved to San Diego, where they spent a year busking and refining their songbook before heading to Austin in the late 1990s. There they adopted the Hot Club of Cowtown name and collaborated with bassist/producer Billy Horton on several projects, including Swingin' Stampede in 1998 and Tall Tales in 1999. Their third album, Dev'lish Mary, appeared in 2000 and included bass contributions from Matt Weiner.
The lineup reached its stable form in 2001 when Tulsa, Oklahoma bassist Jake Erwin joined, bringing a slap-bass style rooted in both rockabilly and western swing that broadened the ensemble's range. The resulting trio issued Ghost Train in 2002, mixing original pieces with classic country and jazz numbers, then followed a year later with the live Continental Stomp, captured at Austin's Continental Club.
A brief split occurred in 2005, during which James issued a solo album and toured with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson while Smith and Erwin performed together in Whit Smith's Hot Jazz Caravan. Ties remained intact, however, and the original trio reunited by 2007. After a 2009 best-of anthology, the reconstituted Hot Club of Cowtown delivered its sixth studio album, Wishful Thinking. The following year they honored Bob Wills with What Makes Bob Holler and later toured alongside Roxy Music.
Rendezvous in Rhythm, their eighth album of western swing standards and gypsy jazz, arrived in 2013. At the 2015 Ameripolitan Awards the group received Western Swing Group of the Year while Elana James was named Western Swing Female of the Year. Midnight on the Trail in 2016 explored cowboy ballads by Gene Autry, Cindy Walker, Johnny Mercer, and others. For their twentieth anniversary in 2017 they reissued the cassette-only Western Clambake, originally recorded during their San Diego busking period. Wild Kingdom appeared in 2019 and featured drummer Damien Llanes.
