Formed toward the close of the 1960s in Britain, this fleeting psychedelic pop group originally went by the name Skin, though it never committed any material to tape under that moniker. Its lineup comprised Gillies Buchan on guitar and vocals, Edward Jones handling bass and vocals, David McNiven on clarinet, and John Romsey at the drums. In 1970 the quartet secured a deal with Decca Records and issued its sole release, Volume One (Instinct). The album met with scant commercial response upon arrival, yet over time it has drawn the attention of collectors. Its tracklist featured compositions bearing expansive titles such as “Brush With The Midnight Butterfly,” “Reality Presented As An Alternative,” and “Appearance Is Everything Style Is A Way Of Living,” each accompanied by correspondingly weighty lyrics. Aligning with the exploratory spirit of contemporaneous progressive acts, the band incorporated Eastern melodic and rhythmic elements, most notably on the standout cut “Maybe Someday.” No further recordings followed, and the musicians soon withdrew from the industry altogether.
