The Human Beinz, a frat rock quartet from Youngstown, Ohio, earned its chief recognition through a rendition of "Nobody but Me," with Ting Markulin on rhythm guitar, Richard Belley on lead guitar, Mel Pachuta on bass, and Mike Tatman behind the drums. Before settling on that name, the ensemble performed locally as the Human Beings and drew steady crowds until a bar gig in Youngstown brought them to wider attention. Early singles offered interpretations of Bob Dylan's "Times They Are A-Changin'," Them's "Gloria," and material by the Who and the Yardbirds, all issued on the regional Gateway label. Capitol Records signed the band in 1967, and its cover of the Isley Brothers' "Nobody but Me" reached the Top Ten. The debut album, also titled Nobody but Me, carried a label-driven name change to the Human Beinz that referenced the hippie slogan "be-in." Evolutions followed the next year and revealed a stronger emphasis on original material, yet the record made little commercial impact before the group disbanded.
