Biography
Originating in Brighton, England, The Hurt Process set out to show that American screamo acts held no monopoly on blending metal, punk, emo, and hardcore into dynamic, emotionally charged material. Emerging during the early 2000s, the group—vocalists Mark Andrews and Daniel Laurence, guitarists Tom Diamond and Alun Burnet-Smith, drummer Darren Toms, and bassist Duncan McGilvary—issued the mini-album Another Day on Loudspeaker in late 2002, drawing strong notices from the U.K. press. Energetic concerts and relentless road work, including dates with Taking Back Sunday, Atreyu, and Silverstein, expanded their following.
The Last Goodbye EP surfaced in 2003, and Golf Records released their debut full-length, Drive By Monologue, which earned further domestic acclaim. Victory Records in Chicago delivered that album to North American audiences in March 2004, after which the band played several Warped Tour dates that summer to build U.S. support. Andrews’s departure reduced the lineup to a quintet, and Adam Yeoman replaced Burnet-Smith on guitar. In May 2005 the streamlined A Heartbeat Behind appeared, backed by road work alongside Aiden and additional acts. Toms left that summer, leading Yeoman to switch to drums while Jordan Schulze joined on guitar. Early 2006 brought Ivan Ferreira in as vocalist to replace Laurence, yet the abrupt cancellation of all shows by midsummer triggered breakup rumors.
