Biography
The Idan Raichel Project, fronted by Israeli keyboardist and producer Idan Raichel, aims to spotlight the rich array of global traditions woven into Israel’s dynamic music environment. After gaining early experience in an army rock band that took him on tours performing for soldiers across the country, Raichel accepted a role at a boarding school for young immigrants. Working with the students introduced him to Israel’s expanding Ethiopian Jewish population, sparking a growing affinity for their folk traditions. He also noticed how many of these boys felt pressured to abandon their origins in order to blend into mainstream Israeli life. That observation motivated Raichel to explore the country’s wider spectrum of immigrant heritages. Spending time with musicians from varied backgrounds, he encouraged both his students and these new acquaintances to honor their cultural roots. Meanwhile he built a reputation as a reliable sideman, supporting several of Israel’s leading pop acts. Drawing on his expanding network of international players and his pop production skills, Raichel began capturing the multicultural material he had started to develop. More than seventy musicians appeared on the demo he used to attract backing for a full album. Helicon Records supplied that support, resulting in the launch of the Idan Raichel Project, whose songs and production were shaped by Raichel and whose performances drew on a wide-ranging group of contributors. The album quickly stirred global interest and drew praise from major industry voices. It registered an immediate breakthrough in Israel and the surrounding region. Responding to their rapid rise in popularity, Raichel and the ensemble sustained a demanding tour schedule.
