Hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina, the Interstellars stepped forward in 1999 intent on reshaping the contours of modern rock. Their take on "River Euphrates" surfaced on the tribute album Pixies Fuckin' Die!, though that release supplied only an early window into the group's expansive outlook. The lineup—DJ/singer Jason Herring, bassist Patch Hanna, guitarist Paul Jensen, keyboardist Dave Puryear, drummer Marlon Young, visual artist Karen Kirby, and saxophonist Dave Walen—constitutes a purposeful collective of experimentalists. For them, sonic exploration and visual presentation carry equal weight. The EPs This Close to Venus and Echoes, both bearing an indie-rock edge, surfaced in 2000 and demonstrated their economical songcraft. Daydreaming and Know by Touching arrived several months afterward, accompanied by a signing to Liquilab Records.
