Biography
Born on 20 September 1941 in San Antonio, Texas, Cullum remained largely unrecognized beyond his home state for an extended period. In his role as a cornetist he has nonetheless helped sustain enthusiasm for traditional jazz across America. His earliest performances took place in an ensemble directed by his father of the same name; in time he assumed control of the group, along with oversight of the family’s recording label and a jazz venue located inside San Antonio’s Landing Hotel. Guest artists passing through or veteran locals such as Ernie Caceres blended readily with the band’s approach. Cullum’s releases present the group as an animated, engaging unit marked by strong individual statements and unified ensemble work, qualities that offset any shortfall in depth with generous vitality.
