Biography
The Juniper Berries infuse experimental elements into their upbeat, melodic psychedelic pop and rock sound. Their initial release, the darker Don't Breathe Through Your Mouth LP from 2017, preceded their Earth Libraries debut with the more Lennon-inspired The Juniper Berries album in 2020. Production refinement continued through evocative, melodic tracks such as the 2023 single "Role Model," leading to their third full-length effort, the grief-tinged Death and Texas, issued in 2024.
River Rouge, Oregon native Josh Stirm recognized his desire to keep writing songs almost as soon as he began composing them during his mid-teens. After developing his abilities gradually, he issued a solo EP of minimalist psychedelic pop under the Juniper Berries name in September 2015. Titled Baby Face and containing four tracks, the EP came out of Ashland, Oregon, while Stirm studied at Southern Oregon University. He soon recruited keyboardist/harmony singer Nina Myers, bassist/harmony singer Jesse Eells-Adams, and drummer/harmony singer Alex J. Moore to track the project's first album. Though self-released and marked by a lo-fi, narcotic atmosphere, Don't Breathe Through Your Mouth still highlighted Stirm's engaging vocal style and melodic instincts.
Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, Stirm handled writing, recording, and mixing duties alone for the stripped-back Missing Pieces EP of May 2020; a full-band Juniper Berries configuration resurfaced that July with the sophomore LP The Juniper Berries. Their first release for Earth Libraries, the album displayed a brighter, more harmonically dense psychedelic identity than its predecessor. Around the same period Stirm moved to Austin, Texas, which triggered another overhaul of an already fluid roster.
Bassist/keyboardist Myles Simpson, drummer John Kealiinohomoku, and second singer/guitarist Dave Hanson joined after the relocation, allowing the Juniper Berries to perform across the Western U.S. while preparing new material. Shaped in part by the deaths of several relatives of Stirm, the finished Death and Texas appeared on Earth Libraries in April 2024.
