Ho Khic Chi, a master of the one-stringed zither known as the dan bau, sustains Vietnam’s traditional music through his ensemble, The Khac Chi Ensemble. The group fashions an evocative, pulse-driven sound by drawing on historic Vietnamese instruments while rendering longstanding melodies. Since beginning its international tours in 1982, the ensemble has made its home in Vancouver, Canada. Alongside Ho Khic Chi, the roster comprises Hoang Ngoc Bich on vocals and as arranger, plus k'longput (percussive tubes), t'rung (suspended bamboo xylophone) and tam thap luc (hammered dulcimer); Le To Quyen handling vocals; Nguyen Hoai Chau on percussion; and Randy Reine-Reusch supplying background vocals, khen be and sinh tien.
