The King Bees

Hailing from New York, this accomplished R&B ensemble operated alongside such acts as the Vagrants and the Myddle Class. Its roster included Danny Kortchmar, also known as Danny Kootch (born 6 April 1946 in Larchmont, New York, USA; guitar), John McDuffy (organ/vocals), Dickie Frank (bass) and Joel ‘Bishop’ O’Brien (born 1943 in the USA, died 9 September 2004 in Los Angeles, California, USA; drums). During its short run the quartet issued three strong singles, one of which was a distinctive reading of ‘Lost In The Shuffle’, a number also cut by Blues Project. After the King Bees folded in autumn 1966, McDuffy stepped into Al Kooper’s role within that latter ensemble. Kortchmar and O’Brien next appeared in the Flying Machine alongside James Taylor, then reconvened in Jo Mama once the guitarist had passed through stints with the Fugs, Clear Light and City.
