The Kinsey Report formed as a family band with Donald Kinsey handling vocals and guitar, Ralph "Woody" Kinsey on drums, Kenneth Kinsey on bass, and Ronald Prince on guitar. Lifelong immersion in the Big Daddy Kinsey household grounded the Kinsey offspring firmly in blues, though they also commanded a wide spectrum of other styles. During the mid-1970s the two older brothers first joined forces in the blues-rock trio White Lightnin', well before they reconvened in 1984 as the Kinsey Report and set off on new rock explorations. Donald's recording and touring work with Albert King and Bob Marley further shaped the sound, and the imprint of those masters, together with Big Daddy Kinsey's own legacy, remains audible throughout the Kinsey Report's music. The ensemble moved confidently across Chicago blues, reggae, rock, funk, and soul while their releases gained distinction from the Kinseys' own songwriting and self-contained production. Drummer Ralph "Woody" Kinsey died at age 71 on January 17, 2024, during treatment for cancer. Guitarist Donald Kinsey, his brother, succumbed to COPD three weeks later on February 6, 2024, at the age of 70.
