The Koreatown Oddity

As the Koreatown Oddity, Los Angeles rapper and producer Dominique Purdy fashions abstract hip-hop with a distinctly bugged-out character. His rhymes swing between invented scenarios and incisive takes on routine existence, frequently touching on broader social concerns. Intentional lo-fi haze and psychedelic textures define his productions, nearly all of which—including the 2014 Ras G collaboration 5 Chuckles and 2015’s Mndsgn-helmed Vivians—appear on cassette. Stones Throw has issued his albums Finna Be Past Tense (2017), the autobiographical Little Dominiques Nosebleed (2020), and Isthisforreal? (2022).

Beyond music, Purdy works as an actor and writer and previously performed standup comedy. He began issuing tapes in 2012; his first vinyl outing arrived with the 2014 LP 200 Tree Rings, whose beats came from House Shoes, J-Swift, Giovanni Marks, and fellow New Los Angeles members. Also that year, Leaving Records put out 5 Chuckles, KTO’s initial full-length project with Ras G. The Mndsgn-produced Vivians followed in 2015. After rejoining Ras G for 2016’s InTheWrld, he signed with Stones Throw. His first release for the label, Finna Be Past Tense—his second vinyl album—surfaced in 2017 and was crafted almost entirely by Vex Ruffin. Scattered instrumental pieces such as A Beat at the Table, Rooster, and That’s a No from Me Dog surfaced across 2018 and 2019.

Little Dominiques Nosebleed, KTO’s second Stones Throw full-length, arrived in 2020 and recounted his Koreatown upbringing along with two car accidents that caused ongoing nosebleeds and sharpened his spiritual perspective. The standalone single “Breastmilk” appeared in 2021. In 2022 the beat tape Trapped Rats and the singles “Aggro Crag” and “Misophonia Love” preceded the concise, cathartic LP Isthisforreal?
