Biography
Dave Terhune, a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist long active in New York’s club circuit, conceived The Kustard Kings. Emerging in 1992, the project took its cue from the classic instrumental groups of the 1960s. Terhune completed the roster by bringing in bassist Joe Katz, organist Joe McGinty, guitarist Kris Woolsey, and drummer Clem Waldmann, after which the ensemble began performing throughout New York City. Although they appeared in cardboard crowns and bathrobes, audiences soon showed greater interest in the music than in any theatrical device. The musicians also inaugurated Loser’s Lounge, a recurring series of evenings devoted to full-length tributes to favored songwriters through cover sets. These events proved popular enough to draw guest performers ranging from Cyndi Lauper to J. Mascis to Ronnie Spector. The most successful Loser’s Lounge presentation paid tribute to Paul Williams, during which the songwriter took the stage and was joined by associates Richard Dreyfuss and Lee Hazelwood. In summer 2002 the band issued its debut album, Blam!, on Confidential Recordings.
