Classifying The Last Goodnight within any narrow stylistic boundary remains elusive beyond the expansive pop/rock designation, although their visual presentation aligns with a conventional emo outfit. The five members first converged as students at Enfield High in Connecticut, where Kurtis John on vocals and piano, Mike Nadeau on lead guitar, Anton Yurack on guitar, keys, and vocals, Leif Christensen on bass, and Larone McMillan on drums began shaping songs built around classic structures that might have slotted directly into the discographies of Elton John and Supertramp. Once they completed high school and entered college in 2003, the musicians issued two independent recordings under the name Renata that quickly attracted broadcast attention. Following the familiar pattern of many groups, they purchased a van and scheduled brief regional tours around weekday obligations, which eventually secured support slots with Lifehouse and Avril Lavigne. A name change preceded a performance at the Whisky A Go Go in L.A. that drew the notice of producer Jeff Blue, who then guided the band into the studio to develop and refine their material. Virgin offered the Last Goodnight a recording contract in 2007, resulting in the August release of their debut album, Poison Kiss.
