Biography
The partnership between Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner and the Rascals' Miles Kane, shaped by the work of Scott Walker and David Bowie, first took shape in 2007 when Kane's earlier outfit the Little Flames joined Arctic Monkeys on tour. Already acquainted through previous shared bills, the two began writing material together that spring and later entered a studio in France with James Ford, who served as both producer and drummer. String sessions featuring the London Metropolitan Orchestra and arrangements by Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy wrapped up the recordings that December.
At the start of 2008 the Last Shadow Puppets performed a pair of concerts in New York and disclosed that a single and album, each titled The Age of the Understatement, would appear on Domino Records that spring. The record earned favorable notices and secured a Mercury Prize nomination. Although the pair discussed making another album, several years passed before they returned to the studio. During that interval Turner remained active with Arctic Monkeys, delivering Humbug in 2009, Suck It and See in 2011, and AM in 2013, while Kane issued the solo sets Colour of the Trap in 2011 and Don't Forget Who You Are in 2013. Occasional live appearances included a 2012 show in Paris during Kane's support slot for Arctic Monkeys and a Glastonbury performance by Kane in 2013.
Following Arctic Monkeys' hiatus in 2014, Turner and Kane regrouped in Los Angeles to develop new songs. Once again working with producer James Ford and arranger Owen Pallett, they completed their second album, Everything You've Come to Expect, which surfaced in 2016 and reached number one on the U.K. albums chart. The release emphasized the duo's orchestral leanings and was promoted with the singles "Bad Habits" and "Aviation." Also that year they issued the six-song EP The Dream Synopsis, which contained re-recordings of two tracks from Everything You've Come to Expect plus covers of songs by Jacques Dutronc, Glaxo Babies, and Leonard Cohen.
