In June 1980 a pair of young Scots relocated to London and soon assembled the short-lived group Laughing Apple. Bassist Alan McGee and guitarist Andrew Innes had already performed together in Scotland with H20 and Newspeak. Operating under the new name, the band issued its own three-song single Ha Ha Hee Hee on Autonomy in March 1981. Participate followed as their second single only a few months later. The outfit disbanded quickly, yet most of its members moved on to more prominent work. McGee later played in Biff Bang Pow! and founded the fledgling Creation label, which achieved major success in the 1990s. Drummer Ken Popple and second guitarist Dick Green both joined McGee in that band, the latter also serving as his closest associate at Creation. Innes subsequently recorded for the label with Revolving Paint Dream and Primal Scream.
