Biography
Lena Meyer-Landrut, who performs under the name Lena, is a German pop vocalist who captured the Eurovision Song Contest in 2010 at the age of 19 by delivering the track “Satellite.” Born May 23, 1991, in Hanover, Germany, she advanced as one of twenty hopefuls chosen for the national television series Unser Star für Oslo, whose victor would represent Germany at Eurovision. Across the eight-week competition she interpreted eight English-language covers drawn from the catalogs of Adele (“My Same”), the Bird and the Bee (“Diamond Dave”), Kate Nash (“Foundations,” “Mouthwash”), Paolo Nutini (“New Shoes”), Lisa Mitchell (“Neopolitan Dreams”), Jason Mraz (“Mr. Curiosity”), and the Cure (“The Lovecats”). During the decisive broadcast she unveiled three original compositions—“Bee,” “Satellite,” and “Love Me”—and emerged the champion ahead of runner-up Jennifer Braun.
Immediately following her Unser Star für Oslo victory, the three songs she had performed on the finale all entered the upper reaches of the German singles chart, with “Satellite” reaching number one, “Bee” peaking at number three, and “Love Me” arriving at number four. Still only nineteen, Lena then triumphed at the Eurovision Song Contest itself with “Satellite,” securing Germany’s first contest victory since 1982. The single rapidly scaled charts throughout Western Europe, claiming the top position in multiple territories. Her debut full-length album, My Cassette Player (2010), produced by Stefan Raab, likewise performed strongly, ascending to number one in both Germany and Austria while reaching the top five in Switzerland. The set featured several of the numbers she had sung on Unser Star für Oslo—“Satellite,” “Bee,” “Love Me,” and two additional covers—alongside eight previously unheard tracks, a handful of which Lena co-wrote. Crystal Sky appeared five years later.
