Biography
In 1983 Reverend Bazil Meade teamed with Lawrence Johnson and Delroy Powell to stage Britain’s first gospel-choir concert. The ensemble became the London Community Gospel Group the next year and still moves listeners with its elevating treatment of sacred music. Combining gospel, swing, and R&B with polished choreography, the singers keep broadcasting their buoyant spirit.
Under Rev. Meade’s direction the London Community Gospel Group has become England’s foremost gospel choir. In addition to mounting between 100 and 150 engagements each year, the ensemble has shared stages, videos, and studio sessions with Tina Turner, George Michael, Diana Ross, Luther Vandross, Elton John, Puff Daddy, Mariah Carey, Sting, and Paul McCartney. Individual members have also recorded or toured with Terence Trent D'arby, Van Morrison, Mica Paris, Denise Williams, Eternal, Chaka Khan, Depeche Mode, and Stevie Wonder. Several alumni—including Ronny Jordan, Jefferson & Whitfield, Nu Colors, Paul Johnson, Lavine Hudson, and Daniel Thomas—have built thriving solo careers.
Fifty singers aged 18 to 40 make up the London Community Gospel Group’s current roster, and the collective has taken part in numerous landmark occasions. In July 1996 the group supplied harmonies for South Africa’s anthem at a Brixton concert attended by Nelson Mandela. Two years later they performed at the wedding of Mel B of the Spice Girls and headlined the inaugural BBC Proms Gospel Night at Royal Albert Hall. Their most indelible contribution remains the soundtrack to the Disney film The Lion King.
