The Lonely Wild fuse indie rock with contemporary folk and touches of chamber pop. Formed in Los Angeles’s Silver Lake district, the ensemble was started by vocalist and guitarist Andrew Carroll together with multi-instrumentalist Ryan Ross, who handles keyboards, guitar, bass, and trumpet. Carroll and Ross had earlier played together in You Me & Iowa before that group disbanded in 2009. In 2010 Carroll, busy writing new songs, asked Ross to assist with arrangements; Ross had likewise been developing fresh material, so the two opted to launch another band to present their work. They brought in vocalist Jennifer Talesfore, then added guitarist Andrew Schneider and drummer Edward Cerecedes to complete the original lineup.

Early in 2011 the band issued its first EP, Dead End, and promoted it through frequent West Coast shows. In 2012, just before recording began on their debut full-length, Talesfore exited and Jessi Williams joined, contributing vocals plus bass, keyboards, guitar, and trumpet. The Sun as it Comes reached stores in spring 2013; by then Edward Cerecedes had left, and David Farina had taken over on drums. Several months prior to the album’s appearance, the group made the download-only concert set Live at the Echo available in both audio and video editions. After extensive national touring, the Lonely Wild turned to crowdsourcing to fund their next studio album. The effort succeeded, resulting in the September 2015 release of Chasing White Light via Entertainment One Music.
