Biography
Since the mid-1990s, The Lovelies have been developing their vibrant indie rock aesthetic. Liv Lovely, born Liv Mueller, established herself through performances with multiple alt-country ensembles in her hometown of Milwaukee before teaming with Damian Strigens, formerly the bassist for The Frogs, to form the band. Their initial release, Baby Justice, arrived in 1997 and attracted attention from college radio stations as a polished pop track. In 2000, Barbara Endes, performing as Barb Lovely, became the guitarist for the group. That same year saw the self-issued second album Hot One achieve recognition on the CMJ charts. Despite frequent changes in personnel, the band upheld its emphasis on catchy pop elements. Billy Backes replaced Damian Strigens on drums in 2002. Early the following year, they secured a recording contract with Force MP, which led to joint performances alongside Guided by Voices and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. White Leather, released in autumn 2003, represented their most unified collection of songs up to that point.
