Biography
The experimental rock duo Lushes hails from Brooklyn, where James Ardery handles vocals, guitar, and synth while Joel Myers covers drums and electronic percussion. In their work as Lushes the pair fuses Ardery’s punk origins with Myers’ more academic path, one that involved borrowing Rachmaninov and Bach CDs from his classically trained organist father and learning classical piano on his own. Drawing on post-rock touchstones such as Slint and June of 44 as well as current acts like Liars and Battles, the duo issued its debut album What Am I Doing? in March 2014; Bachelorette’s Annabel Alpers produced the record. Myers and Ardery enlisted engineer Aaron Mullan plus musicians from Zs, PC Worship, and Parquet Courts to shape Service Industry, a rawer and more confrontational album that appeared in October 2015.
