Biography
Hailing from Macclesfield in Cheshire, England, the band formed as a trio of pseudonymous figures known as The Beater on guitar and vocals, Muttley McLad on bass and vocals, and Chorley The Hord on drums. Their sound fused three-chord boogie, metallic riffs, and punk energy, delivered through a steady stream of crude one-liners and rugby-style rock anthems that both provoked and amused crowds. The words celebrated and amplified the rough-hewn habits of a northern, male-centric pub world, spotlighting real-ale sessions, womanizing, Chinese takeaways, and homophobic attitudes, as illustrated by tracks such as “Now He’s A Poof,” “Eh Up Let’s Sup,” “Dan’s Big Log,” and “No Sheep ‘Til Buxton.” A string of releases steeped in juvenile wit followed, yet the well of inspiration eventually ran dry. Nearly every label and performance space across the country turned them away, leaving their bleak outlook—however grand a term that may be—to linger on.
