The Makes Nice came together in 2005 when guitarist and vocalist Josh Smith, having exited the hard rock-influenced indie rock group the Fucking Champs that same year, assembled a new band to deliver hot-wired power pop charged with punk rock’s drive and intensity. He recruited bassist Aaron Burnham, who had previously played in the Mothballs, along with drummer Jack Matthew, formerly of Harold Ray: Live in Concert. The trio began performing regularly throughout San Francisco clubs and issued its debut album, Candy Wrapper & Twelve Other Songs, in February 2007 through the local independent imprint Frenetic Records. Eight months after that release, the group put out a second LP titled This Time Tomorrow. Their run of rapid output proved brief, however, as Smith parted company with his bandmates in 2008, after which Burnham and Matthew formed the Saucy Jacks.
