Multi-instrumentalist B. Patric, born Pat Stolley, turned an unplanned vision into Marlboro Chorus from his base in Davenport, IA. An initial basement experiment yielded several striking pop tracks. Tripmaster Monkey drummer Marty "Rudie" Reyhons joined a handful of those sessions, while Driver of the Year drummer Justin Parris, also known as the Emperor Justinian, added percussion to the emerging jangle pop material. Patric also connected with local pianist Rick Stoneking, who contributed his skills. In fall 2002, Patric, Parris, and Gary Heitman established the independent label Future Appletree. Good Luck, filled with glorious Americana, '60s pop/rock, and indie rock sensibilities, arrived in early 2003. Their Entangled EP followed in spring 2004. By fall the group issued its second album, the adventurous hi-fi pop sounds of Youth Medium.
