Biography
Enthusiasts of classic soul and R&B, the Mighty Sceptres operate as a Cornwall-rooted ensemble fronted by Nick Radford and Angeline Morrison, fusing the laid-back grooves of the 1950s and 1960s with Morrison’s smoldering delivery. A musician and graphic artist who has also issued material as Frootful, Radford had previously joined Morrison on several sessions for the British retro-soul outlet Freestyle Records. Morrison, for her part, lent her voice to Lack of Afro and the Ambassadors of Sorrow before releasing the 2013 solo album Are You Ready Cat?
Midway through 2013 the pair formed the Mighty Sceptres, with Radford on guitar and Morrison handling vocals. They assembled a horn-augmented lineup and brought in producer Kryzysztof Oktalski to track the debut single “Siren Call” at a studio whose vintage console duplicated the model used for Al Green’s landmark 1970s recordings, while the players restricted themselves to period-appropriate equipment. Ubiquity Records issued “Siren Song” in late 2013, where it resonated strongly with nuevo-soul listeners and spurred Radford and Morrison to begin work on the group’s first album. Produced by Chris Pedley of the Baker Brothers, All Hail the Mighty Sceptres! appeared in September 2014.
