Originally assembled in the early 1990s as an outlet for singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Robert White—whose prior credits include Ring, Levitation, and Zag & the Coloured Beads—The Milk and Honey Band took its cues from the pastoral and experimental textures of 1960s psychedelic and space rock alongside 1970s power pop. White formally introduced the project in 1994 via Round the Sun; issued by Rough Trade, the record’s lo-fi sonics and brooding, progressive character mirrored his mounting dissatisfaction with Levitation. Over the ensuing years he amassed new material while working in commercial music production, during which multi-instrumentalists Richard Yale and Michael Tubb joined the lineup and helped shape 2001’s Boy from the Moon on Uglyman Records. The band signed with Ape Records—founded by XTC mastermind Andy Partridge—in 2004, resulting in The Secret Life of the Milk and Honey Band, which was followed five years later by Dog Eared Moonlight.
