Drawing from the melodic hooks and lively drive of 1960s pop and rock, the confident stance and prominent guitars of 1970s rock, along with the push-and-pull between emotional tension and upbeat vitality that marked the 1980s and 1990s, The Modern Society crafted a distinctive sound by blending those strands into something entirely their own. The Atlanta, GA-based group came together in 2005 when lead singer and guitarist Woody Brown joined forces with lead guitarist Tyler Bence. Both musicians had already logged time in the local scene, and after discussing their musical preferences during an informal gathering, they recognized a shared vision that prompted them to collaborate. Brown and Bence started writing material together, and once they felt ready to perform it live, Bence called on his high school acquaintances—bassist Chris Martin and drummer Thomas Carter—to complete the lineup. Their debut performance drew an unexpectedly large crowd of 400 enthusiastic supporters, launching the band’s momentum right away. After only three concerts, The Modern Society earned a “Best Local Band” nomination in the Atlanta Music Guide awards, prompting the members to pool resources for studio time with producer Danny Howes. Their first full-length release, Friends & Enemies, appeared before 2005 concluded. The following two years found the quartet on the road almost constantly, covering the South and Midwest while making occasional trips to both coasts and scheduling several European shows. That expanding audience and consistent touring eventually attracted Original Signal Recordings, which offered the band a recording contract. Working once more in the studio, this time alongside producer Stacy Jones, The Modern Society completed their follow-up, The Beat Goes On, issued at the close of 2008.
