Biography
Led by the talented singer and songwriter Richard Davies, who later achieved solo success in America and formed one half of the brief duo Cardinal, the Australian chamber pop band the Moles originated in Sydney during the late 1980s. Their first release, the 1990 EP Untune the Sky, was followed in 1991 by the EP Tendrils & Paracetamol. After issuing their debut full-length album, also called Untune the Sky, in 1992, the group moved to New York and put out a pair of 7" singles that appeared together as the Double Single EP. A subsequent relocation to London brought widespread praise from the British press, yet the band dissolved near the start of 1993. Davies revived the Moles name in 1994 for the album Instinct, a project that was collective in title alone and effectively launched his solo path, though his official debut arrived with 1996’s There’s Never Been a Crowd Like This. Following a series of releases under his own name as well as with Cardinal and with Cosmos, the latter a partnership alongside Guided by Voices’ Robert Pollard, Davies unveiled the expansive 24-track Tonight’s Music in 2016, marking the first new Moles album in more than two decades.
