Biography
The Morning After Girls emerged from Australia as a band blending psychedelia, shoegaze, and indie pop into expansive, atmospheric soundscapes. Sacha Lucashenko and Martin B. Sleeman launched the project in 2003 after crossing paths at a Melbourne concert and recognizing their overlapping musical interests. They soon brought in Anton Jakovljevic on drums and began developing original material. Seeking a more supportive environment, the trio moved to Sydney, where Scott Von Ryper joined on bass and Aimee Nash contributed guitar, keyboards, and percussion to finalize the initial lineup. Positive early coverage of their live shows led to a 2004 EP on the independent Rubber Records imprint, followed by two additional EPs on the British Best Before label in 2005. Tracks from these releases were later assembled into a full-length album issued in Australia as Shadows Evolve and in the United States as The Morning After Girls.
Extensive touring ensued across Australia and the United Kingdom, including shared bills with the Brian Jonestown Massacre, the Dandy Warhols, and the Warlocks. The Morning After Girls reached American audiences for the first time in 2006 via a performance at the South by Southwest Music Conference. In 2008 Lucashenko and Sleeman parted ways with their bandmates and settled in New York City, though they had already initiated work on a follow-up record. Primarily tracked in Melbourne, the 2009 release Alone introduced a revised configuration featuring E.J. Hagen on bass, Alexander White on keyboards and percussion, and Anthony Johnson on drums and percussion, with Alan Moulder handling production duties alongside Lucashenko and Sleeman. Xemu Records issued the album globally in 2011.
