Having spent multiple years immersed in England's pub rock circuit, Nick Garvey and Andy McMaster, both formerly of Duck Deluxe, established the Motors in 1977 alongside vocalist Bram Tchaikovsky and drummer Ricky Slaughter. Their debut effort stood out as a strong specimen of guitar-driven pop/rock, anchored by the single "Dancing the Night Away." Approved By brought U.K. successes with the hits "Airport" and "Forget About You," as the band's songwriting gained strength through robust melodies and energetic deliveries. Once that album appeared, the Motors disbanded, though Garvey and McMaster later reused the name for the 1980 release Tenement Steps, an album that lacked the drive of the first two records.
