Biography
The Mystic Tide, a little-known garage outfit from Long Island, operated briefly from 1965 through 1967. During this period, they developed a modest repertoire blending aggressive psychedelic fuzz with introspective, atmospheric melodies reminiscent of the Zombies and Them. Although the group put out merely five 45s during their existence, Joe Docko later compiled their complete recordings plus previously unheard tracks in the 1990s, while the Numero Group issued a fresh remastered edition of their entire discography in 2024 via the archival compilation Frustration.
Formed in 1965 on Long Island, New York, under the direction of guitarist and composer Joe Docko, the Mystic Tide issued four singles on their own between 1966 and 1967. These captured an ominous strain of nascent psychedelia marked by gritty distorted guitars, anxious lyrics, and subtle Middle Eastern-inflected enigmatic qualities. The band stayed virtually unnoticed even regionally before splitting in 1967. Over subsequent decades, their forward-looking style captured the attention of garage rock scholars and fans alike, causing their scarce originals to command high prices among collectors. Docko put together a self-titled collection of the band's eleven tracks in 1991. Three years afterward, he produced Solid Ground, which added unreleased material to their core recordings.
