The Naked Truth

This Atlanta, Georgia-based quartet first formed amid the local hardcore scene in 1988, drawing its members from widely scattered origins: Detroit supplied vocalist Doug Watts, Harlem, New York, supplied bassist Jeff, Los Angeles supplied drummer Bernard Dawson, and only guitarist Jimmie Westley hailed from within the state, specifically Savannah. Life proved difficult at first for a black metal band in Georgia, yet the dreadlocked outfit caught the attention of former Clash manager Bernie Rhodes, who secured them a Sony deal and arranged their move to London. Their debut album Green With Rage unveiled Naked Truth’s raw, aggressive approach, colored by distinctive jazz and funk touches, but homesick Jeff soon left and was succeeded by London-born Kwame Boaten in time for the Read Between The Lines EP. A cancelled Motörhead support slot unexpectedly opened the door to a UK tour with Little Angels, and despite the stylistic mismatch Naked Truth were warmly received. London residencies helped the group cultivate a broad audience ahead of the album Fight, which showcased their skill at blending elements as far apart as jazz and death metal with seamless conviction while Watts shifted fluidly between rap and full-throttle hardcore intensity and delivered thoughtful lyrics. Strong performances alongside Living Colour on a UK run followed, after which the band opted to rename themselves Watts before issuing their next full-length release.
