Biography
Emerging from the English folk rock movement of the 1960s that produced Steeleye Span and The Fairport Convention, while drawing further nourishment from the DC folkscene that introduced Mary Chapin Carpenter, The New St. George simultaneously points toward future directions in folk music and reflects its historical roots. Their avant/traditional approach comfortably embraces both 16th Century Breton jigs and originals written by band members. The award winning ensemble comprises Jennifer Cutting on keyboards, accordion and arrangements, Juan Dudley on drums, Bob Hitchcock on acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin and vocals, Rico Petrucelli on bass, and Lisa Moscatiello on guitar, bouzouki, whistle and vocals. They continue a longstanding practice among musicians who adapt ancient songs and melodies to contemporary instruments infused with varied musical influences. Elements of jazz, rock, classical, folk and Morris dance music combine to define the distinctive sound of The New St. George.
