Biography
Following the conclusion of their prior outfit, the Texas slowcore stalwarts Bedhead, siblings Matt and Bubba Kadane assembled the New Year as its natural successor. They were joined by Peter Schmidt, who had occasionally augmented Bedhead on guitar, along with former Come drummer Chris Brokaw and bassist Mike Donofrio. Because extensive touring had contributed to Bedhead’s dissolution, the new group confined itself to occasional live appearances before entering the studio with Steve Albini in Chicago at the close of 2000. The resulting Newness Ends preserved the earlier band’s unvarnished force and mood while developing the rhythmic flexibility that had only begun to surface on Bedhead’s last release; Touch & Go issued the album in the first months of 2001. Maintaining an unchanged roster, the musicians maintained their measured tempo, delivering The End Is Near in May 2004 and The New Year in September 2008. Once the latter album appeared, activity subsided as the Kadanes joined David Bazan and Will Johnson in Overseas. The New Year resurfaced in early 2017 with the single “Recent History,” which preceded the April arrival of Snow, the quartet’s fourth long-player.
