Biography
A relaxed ensemble drawing from jazz and soul traditions, the Nick Hexum Quintet is fronted by 311 vocalist and guitarist Nick Hexum together with his brother Zack on guitar. Nick came into the world in Wisconsin in 1970 and spent his formative years in Omaha, Nebraska, where he performed with the high school jazz band and started several local rock groups. After a short stay in Los Angeles toward the close of the 1980s, he headed back to Omaha and assembled the core of what later became 311 alongside his friend Chad Sexton. Across the 1990s and into the early 2000s, Nick toured and recorded with 311, resulting in multiple albums that enjoyed strong commercial success. In 2004 Nick and Zac—who received a jazz degree from North Texas University in 2000—joined forces on the road in support of presidential candidate John Kerry. By 2013 the brothers had reunited to issue the first Nick Hexum Quintet album, My Shadow Pages, comprising solely original material composed by Nick.
