Nomad formed as the London-based duo pairing Damon Rochefort, who managed programming and production duties, with soulful singer Sharon Dee Clarke. The act issued only a single album, 1991's Changing Cabins, yet that release contained the inescapable club hit "(I Wanna Give You) Devotion," which dominated playlists for several months that year. Clarke had already issued multiple well-regarded 12" singles before the project, among them 1989's "Something Special" and 1986's "Dance Your Way Out the Door." Rochefort, who had previously remixed assorted singles and contributed to the collective G.T., treated Nomad as his first major undertaking in writing and performing the bulk of the music. Although the duo disbanded after that lone album, Rochefort and Clarke maintained their creative alliance on the follow-up venture Serious Rope, which brought in Aron Friedman as a fresh collaborator. Rochefort and Friedman handled writing and production not only for their own singles featuring Clarke on vocals but also for outside artists such as Kim Wilde, LaToya Jackson, and Jeanne Dee.
