Biography
New York free jazz drummer Whit Dickey originated the Nommonsemble after performing with the David S. Ware Quartet in the mid-‘90s and after issuing his own projects on the AUM Fidelity and Wobbly Rail labels. The lineup is completed by pianist Matthew Shipp, violist Mat Maneri, and alto saxophonist and flautist Rob Brown. Before the quartet assembled, its members had already worked together in shifting combinations, as when Dickey and Maneri appeared on Shipp's 1997 album Flow Of X and when Brown recorded on Dickey's Transonic plus several of Shipp's early releases. Their first collective effort as a quartet, however, arrived only with the Nommonsemble's 2001 debut Life Cycle.
