The Origin

Hailing from Topeka, Kansas, Origin operates as a five-piece ensemble devoted to death/grind metal marked by absurd technical demands, breakneck velocity, and unrelenting brutality. From the 1997 debut EP onward and through the self-titled Relapse full-length issued in 2000, the group committed fully to rapid tremolo and sweep techniques on guitar and bass, downtuned triplet and quintuplet sixteenth-note patterns on the lowest string, plus nonstop blastbeat density. Sole remaining founder Paul Ryan anchors the lineup on guitar. John Longstreth handled drums from 1999 to 2003 before returning in 2007, bassist Mike Flores entered in 2002, and Jason Keyser has served as vocalist since late 2011. Antithesis from 2008 earned the strongest critical consensus the band had seen since its first release, while Entity in 2011 captured the group as a trio prior to Keyser’s arrival. Omnipresent arrived in 2014 and highlighted the quartet’s reemergence with a somewhat reduced pace, and Unparalleled Universe followed in 2017 by restoring the signature speed and technical ferocity. Abiogenesis: A Coming Into Existence from 2019 gathered early demos along with additional material composed by Ryan in the band’s formative period, and Chaosmos marked the quartet’s full studio return in 2022.

Paul Ryan and Jeremy Turner established Origin in July 1997. Within six months the pair added bassist Clint Appelhanz, vocalist Mark Manning, and drummer George Fluke, producing the October 1998 demo A Coming Into Existence. The next year brought bassist Doug Williams, formerly of Cephalic Carnage, and drummer John Longstreth, ex-Angel Corpse, into the fold; this configuration recorded the 2000 self-titled Relapse debut. Subsequent touring took the band across the United States and Europe alongside Cryptopsy, Vader, Cephalic Carnage, and Dying Fetus.

Further personnel shifts preceded the next recording. James Lee replaced Manning on vocals while Mike Flores became the permanent bassist in place of Williams, yielding 2002’s Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas. Echoes of Decimation in 2005 further displayed the ensemble’s mounting instrumental complexity, yet 2006 saw James King and Clint Appelhanz depart for Unmerciful, leaving Paul Ryan to cover all guitar duties on tour. Jeremy Turner rejoined temporarily for Antithesis in 2008, which registered a solid Heatseekers chart placement.

Additional changes preceded Entity in 2011, recorded by the stripped-down trio of Ryan, Flores, and Longstreth and greeted with divided responses. The 2014 addition of vocalist Jason Keyser restored quartet status on Colin Marston-mixed Omnipresent, which received strong praise even as the material shifted toward slower, grind-leaning territory. Two world tours preceded the 2017 Nuclear Blast release Unparalleled Universe, the first occasion the band had retained an identical lineup across consecutive albums.

Three extensive tours carried the group through 2019. Abiogenesis: A Coming Into Existence collected the initial EP together with various early Ryan compositions from the 1990s. Pandemic restrictions halted activity for two years until the same lineup reentered the studio in 2021. The resulting ten-track Chaosmos appeared in June 2022 amid an American tour; Agonia issued the album in Europe while Nuclear Blast handled all other territories. Origin and Robert Rebeck co-produced the set, with mastering credited to Colin Marks.
