The Paisleys

Origin: U.S.A
Listen on Coda
The Paisleys exemplified the sort of group that the Mothers of Invention skewered without mercy on We're Only in It for the Money. Their only LP, Cosmic Mind at Play, overflows with the guileless cosmic platitudes typical of late-'60s psychedelia, delivered earnestly and with solid instrumental skill. Though lightweight, the record avoids outright embarrassment and places the electric keyboard in a more prominent role than most comparable acts; it reached a wider audience after its 1980s reissue on LP for collectors.

Formed in Minneapolis, the band recorded that lone album under Warren Kendrick, a producer responsible for numerous garage-rock and psychedelic sessions in the city from the mid-'60s through the early '70s, most prominently those by the Litter. The Paisleys even assisted Kendrick in constructing the studio where Cosmic Mind at Play was tracked, and a mere couple of thousand copies appeared upon its 1970 release. The authorized 2003 CD edition on Sundazed appended six bonus tracks—five of them previously unheard—drawn from 1968-70 demos, outtakes, and live performances.
