Phantom Family Halo emerged in Louisville, Kentucky as a pioneering experimental acid-folk ensemble built around core members Michael McMahan of the For Carnation and Dominic Cipolla from Sapat. Drawing from the shadowy, forward-thinking textures of the 1960s and 1970s, the group fuses the astute, avant-garde folk approach of Six Organs of Admittance with the volatile, marshy, and erratic psych rock associated with Roky Erickson. The band issued its first full-length album, Legend of Black Six, in 2007, then followed with Monoliths & These Flowers Never Die in 2009. In 2011 it delivered Mindeater, a joint EP recorded with Bonnie "Prince" Billy, via the Knitting Factory label.
