In the late 2000s a quartet called Plateaus emerged in San Diego, fusing punk energy with power pop structures. The members coalesced out of a loosely affiliated circle of local players already active in separate groups, specifically drummer and sound engineer Jon Greene, singer/guitarist Kevin Gist, guitarist Elliot Moeller, and bassist Chris Rosi. Their approach reflected the rawer strain of power pop, particularly the work of Redd Kross, Guided by Voices, and early releases on the Flying Nun Records roster. The name itself originated as a playful abstraction of the film title Platoon; Gist selected it after browsing DVDs and concluding that a slight mispronunciation would yield an appropriate handle. After performing around town for many months, the band issued a run of 7" singles on the underground punk labels Art Fag and Hozac in 2011. Extensive touring occupied the remainder of that year, while 2012 was devoted to completing a debut full-length slated for Art Fag.
