Biography
Power Steppers conceals his actual identity by deliberately steering clear of public attention, which means any conversations with the reclusive figure must occur exclusively via facsimile or electronic mail. The driving presence within the project entered the music sphere without prior background in the discipline, having instead devoted earlier efforts to eco-agriculture, conservation initiatives, and primate research; those same qualifications eventually directed him toward preservation projects across Africa and South America. His introduction to sound came through north London’s dancehall environment, where the commanding presence of Jah Shaka played the central role. While Shaka supplied the dominant spark, additional reference points such as Ash Ra Temple, Faust, and Brain Ticket coalesced into a distinctly defined dub aesthetic. Within that framework, bass guitar and delay functioned as the core tools of dissent, yielding spare, minimal dubs engineered to grip and provoke listeners. He committed material to tape alongside the gabba gabba dubbers Zion Train on the group’s own Universal Egg imprint, while his sonic signature gained further reach through the band’s Bass Odyssey soundsystem. Those dub releases found particular favor among the swelling listenership drawn to the ambient dub style then in vogue. Zion Train have stated: ‘Power Steppers is one of the strangest people it has ever been our pleasure to meet’.
