Biography
Originating as a five-piece group based in Santa Rosa within northern California's Sonoma County, The Pullice counted among its ranks musicians who would later strengthen lineups in several more prominent acts. Bruce Brymar handled vocals, Bruce Walford played lead guitar, Rich Haines manned the organ, Dave Shallock took care of bass, and Don Banducci sat behind the drums. Locally popular at the time, the musicians failed in their bid to record at the ubiquitous Golden State Recorders. Shallock subsequently joined the Sons of Champlin, while Brymar and Banducci moved on to the Ducks and the Flying Circus, respectively. Early Kinks recordings supplied the dominant influence, though the two surviving tracks also reveal affinities with the Pretty Things and Manfred Mann; Walford and Haines split lead instrument responsibilities between them. A playful approach to their material could not overcome the constraints of operating as a basic rock & roll band amid the rapid emergence of fresh styles week after week during 1965-1966, a factor that likely contributed to their brief existence. Both demo recordings later appeared on Big Beat's Good Things Are Happening.
